Planning and Preparing for a Move

Circumstances have changed and you are looking to make a move.  Planning and preparing is the most important thing to do when it comes to relocating… whether you are moving to another state or to a neighboring city.  Regardless if you are experienced when it comes to moving, by failing to plan and prepare you are setting yourself up for problems and headaches.  Don’t add to your stress level!

The number one step to take is to accurately assess how much you will be moving to your new location.  The more you have, the more expenses you will incur for the move whether that be through a moving company or for yourself with your time, travel and resources.  Can you downsize any?  Do you have anything that you would like to donate to charity?  Now is the time to consider these questions.

Next, you must take into account the distance that you will be covering when moving to your new home – (check here).  If you are not moving too far away and do not have too much to move, you may not need a moving company and might be able to manage just fine by renting a truck or two and finding your own manpower and resources.  If you are planning on doing things on your own, start now in getting the help that you will need for moving day.  Do not wait until last minute!

Third, you must put together a packing plan.  Which items will you start packing now and which items will you pack last?  How will you arrange things at your new place?  It is a good idea to label boxes so that yourself and whoever is helping you move knows exactly where to put certain things.  Most of the battle is packing and unpacking and by making sure that these processes are as organized as possible, you can save yourself a lot of unnecessary headaches.

Moving can be an intimidating process, especially if it is for your very first time.  No matter how seasoned you might be, without properly planning and preparing you will find that things can become chaotic and overwhelming very quickly.  Make it easier on yourself and start taking the necessary steps today to jumpstart your next move as soon as you have a date in mind and know that you are moving.
